The “Hotel Cass” photo is a pretty amateur job at Photoshop. The “burned out” letters are clearly a bit of… post-processing.

E. Beck is correct the Tacoma building was actually done on purpose. The S is always turned off from about December 1st to January 1st for the last, I would say, 10 years that I remember.
