Guys, We Need To Talk…about Michael Douglas’ “Oral Sex Caused My Cancer” Thing

Guys, we need to talk…

By now we’ve all heard about Michael Douglas’ interview with The Guardian

“Asked whether he now regretted his years of smoking and drinking, usually thought to be the cause of the disease, Douglas replied: “No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus.’”

He continued…

“I did worry if the stress caused by my son’s incarceration didn’t help trigger it. But yeah, it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.”

Okay, so while it’s always admirable when a public figure is open about their medical history, because it can help to spread awareness of diseases/preventative care for said diseases, etc., I can’t help but think that this admission may have brought some embarrassment for his wife, Catherine Zeta Jones.  He shared that his cancer may have come from HPV from oral sex (which we would all assume occurred between him and his wife), but as a consequence of this admission, he basically told the world that Zeta Jones has HPV.

Douglas was simply being honest about his diagnosis, yes, but if I were Catherine Zeta Jones I think I’d be more than a little upset about this.  I’m all for husbands gushing about still being extremely attracted to their wives, and I’m all for any public figure being candid about their medical history when it serves to educate the public, but I feel like this is just a little too much information.  Unless Zeta Jones told her husband, “Sure, honey!  Tell everyone that you got cancer because you went down on me!” I feel like this whole thing might be upsetting to her…
