Justin Timberlake Should Learn to Nod and Smile

Justin Timberlake

Let’s all take a deep breath before we talk about Justin Timberlake’s tweet during the BET Awards last night. What the heck was he thinking? Here’s what happened.

Jesse Williams received the Humanitarian Award in recognition of his efforts to raise awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement. His acceptance speech quickly evoked a reaction and people were sharing it, praising him for being an inspiration.

In case you missed it, here’s some of what Williams said:
“We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us. Burying Black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil. Black gold…

Ghettoizing and demeaning our creations, then stealing them, gentrifying our genius, then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit. The thing is though, just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real.”

Pretty heavy, powerful stuff, right? Well, Justin Timberlake chose to share his thoughts on Twitter (always a great idea!).

Really? Even if you disagree with Williams’ comments, Timberlake’s tweet was unnecessary and the Twitterverse didn’t waste any time letting him know it.

While there are so many examples floating around, this one probably sums up the reaction best:
#JustinTimberlake by saying we are all the same dismissed Jesse Williams speech entirely and proved his point at the same time well done.”

So far, Timberlake has been pretty apologetic but the damage is done. It will be interesting to see how this all gets resolved but it’s safe to say that he may have lost a few fans last night.
