Lena Dunham Asks Maria Shriver About “Penis” on Today Show
Lena Dunham is a part-time self-described feminist and a full-time hot mess. Honestly, we don’t know what to say about her anymore. While there’s definitely potential for her to empower women of all ages, she often comes across as someone who is just in it for the shock value.
This time, she was on the Today show talking to Maria Shriver about the upcoming season of her HBO series, Girls. The usually unflappable Shriver, a 61-year-old seasoned journalist, was completely flustered when Dunham asked: “You saw a penis, right?”
Shriver, who had said she watched several of the new episodes responded with: “Well, I saw more than that. You caught me there for a second. I’m not sure if you’re allowed to say that on television.”
Rather than apologize, Dunham giggled and said: “I won’t be coming back. Going out with a bang!”
Prince of darkness, Matt Lauer, even seemed shocked as he stood just off camera. After laughing awkwardly, all he could muster for a moment was “What?!”
Incredibly, Dunham said penis AGAIN as Shriver sat stunned. Rather than overtly reprimand her, Shriver was subtly savage and said: “See, that’s the difference between generations. I wasn’t brought up talking like that.”
Before the segment ended, Dunham managed to quip: “I’m thrilled by what’s just happened here.”
To be clear, the words breast and vagina are said regularly on television. On the Today show, this is almost exclusively on medical segments focusing on women’s health. We also know that, in society, there seems to be a double-standard about men and women’s bodies so, really, the word penis should not be off-limits.
That being said, there’s a time and place for everything. Dropping swear words into a children’s cartoon is inappropriate and blindsiding talk show hosts on morning television is also inappropriate.
Lena Dunham, you need to learn some boundaries. For a woman who claims to be so emotionally responsible, you sure are reckless!
