The Oscars Pulled a Steve Harvey With Best Picture Award

Posted by Kelli on February 26, 2017

Wow! Did you watch the Oscars Sunday night? If you waited up to see who was named Best Picture, you got to see the craziness that unfolded on the stage. It was something out of a Miss Universe pageant… remember when Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner?

Well, it happened again. Except, this time, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handing out the prize.

After seeing the lineup of films nominated in the category, Beatty opened the envelope and seemed completely perplexed. He looked at it a few times and then showed it to Dunaway. She smirked and told him to make the announcement but, clearly, he didn’t want to. Instead, she finally announced that La La Land had one the night’s biggest award.

Except it hadn’t.

The whole crew was on stage and were mostly through their acceptance speeches when a commotion went down and it was announced that Moonlight was the actual winner. What the heck? Fortunately, the La La Land people were super gracious and handed over the Oscar. It was a huge mess and totally ruined this big, epic moment for two filmmaking teams.

So what happened?

Warren Beatty returned to the microphone to explain that, when he opened the envelope, it said “Emma Stone/La La Land” and he didn’t know what to do. He then added: “I wasn’t trying to be funny.” Good thing he explained because he and his Bonnie and Clyde co-star seemed a little sketchy for a minute there!

Congratulations to Moonlight but, man, how much did it suck to win this way? What a huge mistake. How do you mess up the most important award of the night?
