Melissa Etheridge Likes to get High with Her Kids
Before anyone gets too bent out of shape, this isn’t about whether marijuana is good or evil. It’s about Melissa Etheridge. She has been accused of shady things in the past and has been incredibly judgmental of others (including Angelina Jolie and her decision to undergo a preventive double mastectomy) but now she wants the world to know that she gets high with her kids and that it’s totally fine.
The 55-year-old musician battled breast cancer in 2004 and used cannabis to stave off nausea and other symptoms. Today, she still smokes up but now she does it in the company of her wife, Linda Wallem, and her children, Bailey, 20, and Beckett, 18.
She explained: “I have smoked with my older two. It was funny at first, and then they realized, it’s a very natural, end-of-the-day [thing] … And it brings you much closer. I’d much rather have a smoke with my grown kids than a drink — oh, God, no.”
Uhhhh, what? Again, we aren’t getting into an argument about cannabis versus alcohol but do we really want to say that parents and kids should smoke up together every night as a way to grow closer together? Supporting the potential benefits of the plant is one thing, claiming it will fix the problems that exist within families is another.
Etheridge, who also has 10-year-old twins, Johnnie Rose and Miller Steven, says that her kids aren’t confused about the substance. “My children have a very clear understanding of cannabis,” she said. “When I hold it without shame or confusion, then they can understand it as simple as if I was pointing to a bottle of Percocet and said, ‘That’s Mama’s medicine.’ You take the naughtiness out of it, and it’s not something that kids run to.”
Well, if it’s “mama’s medicine,” why is everyone smoking it in a circle together and singing kumbaya? Ugh, celebrities who try to become gurus are so annoying.
