Video: Venus Williams May Not Have Caused Fatal Crash

The saga surrounding Venus Williams’ alleged involvement in a fatal car crash has taken another unexpected turn. After, initially, trying to make it seem like the tennis pro was at fault, new video has led police to say that she “lawfully entered the intersection” and that there’s “no final determination” of who was at fault.

A statement released by the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department stated: “Based on the evidence obtained in the ongoing investigation, it has been determined the vehicle driven by Venus Williams lawfully entered the intersection on a circular green traffic signal.” The police report claimed that Williams violated the “right of way of” the other driver so this is a pretty major shift in the case.

The horrible accident occurred on June 9 when, as Williams has consistently maintained, she entered the intersection on a green light.  As the statement explained, “due to heavy traffic, she became held up in the intersection when another car ‘entered the intersection traveling south, and made a left turn in front of William’s vehicle, causing her to stop advancing through the intersection to avoid a collision.”

This near-collision was, unfortunately, what led to the second, fatal crash. A vehicle operated by Linda Barson drove through the same intersection on a green light and T-boned Williams’ vehicle. Her 78-year-old husband, Jerome Barson, who was a passenger, was taken to a local hospital but died two weeks later.

During a recent press conference at Wimbledon, Williams was asked about the accident and the 37-year-old was so overcome with emotion that she couldn’t even respond. Through tears she said, “there are really no words to describe, like, how devastating. I am completely speechless and it’s just — yeah, I just.”

The Barson family has launched a wrongful death lawsuit and Williams’ lawyer had to obtain an emergency protection order to prevent them from obtaining and inspecting evidence in her absence. Michael Steinger, who represents Linda Barson, explained, “It’s a 35 year marriage, the love of her life, and he ultimately ended up passing away on Linda Barson’s 68th birthday. This has been devastating to their family.”

There is no doubt that this is absolutely horrifying for them. Blaming someone unfairly for Jerome Barson’s death, however, will not bring him back. Hopefully, this case can end with a resolution that is fair for everyone involved.
