Leah Remini Reminds Us That Elisabeth Moss is a Scientologist
Leah Remini has been on a mission to inform the public about the alleged dangers associated with the Church of Scientology. She has shared some pretty horrifying tales of abuse and downright craziness on her A&E docuseries, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, which is gearing up for a second season.
As she has spoken her truth, she’s been targeted by current followers and even cut off from friends and family. The actress spent more than 30 years as a member of the group after her family joined when she was very young.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she raised eyesbrows when she said, “Elisabeth Moss believes that she can’t talk to me. There’s a thing in Scientology called ‘acceptable truth.’ It means you only say what’s acceptable to the public. But she believes that I’m an antisocial personality — because I’ve spoken out against Scientology. So she isn’t allowed to talk to me. And me knowing that, I wouldn’t put her in the awkward position.”
If you believe the comments in the stories now circulating across the internet, many people either didn’t know or had forgotten that Moss is a Scientologist. She’s never hidden this fact, though. While she may have decided to no longer talk about it, telling Vulture, “it’s private, off limits,” she previously praised her faith for giving her stability.
Both women are nominees at the upcoming Emmy Awards which are set to take place in September. Moss is being recognized in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for her performance in Handmaid’s Tale while Remini is nominated for Outstanding Informational Series Or Special.
For her part, Remini said that, if they crossed paths, “I would, of course [congratulate her]. I don’t hold anything against Elisabeth Moss other than she’s continuing to support a group that is abusive and destroying families. That’s for her to learn — just as I needed to learn it.”
Does that camaraderie go both ways? Possibly not. This past weekend, Remini won the Best Reality Series prize at the TCA Awards and Moss reportedly “left the room.” Fittingly, during her acceptance speech, Remini said, “I spent most of my life being told the world outside Scientology would fail me, that I would fail, and that without it I wasn’t worth a whole lot,” she said. “I thank you for proving those theories wrong.”
