Selena Gomez Had a Kidney Transplant and Everyone is Shocked
Fans were incredibly shocked this morning to see an Instagram post shared by Selena Gomez. No, she wasn’t giving details about a new album or a status update on her relationship. Instead, she revealed that she had a kidney transplant this summer and is still recovering.
The 25-year-old singer, who suffers from lupus, was not a match for any of her family members but, finally, a suitable donor emerged – her best friend and star of The Secret Life of the American Girl, Francia Raisa. Along with her lengthy caption, Gomez revealed a photo of them in side-by-side hospital beds.
“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” she wrote. “I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery,” she continued. “And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed.”
Gomez also shared two close-up pictures of the scar from her surgery and explained, “I’ve been through stuff and I think that it’s been able to test me as a person.”
Lupus is an inflammatory disease than can affect the kidneys, heart, and lungs. The former Wizards of Waverly Place actress is being closely monitored for any signs of rejection.
