Serena Williams to Play Tennis for First Time Since Giving Birth
Many American mothers wish they could take more time off after having a baby but they can’t afford it. Tennis superstar, Serena Williams, who is married to Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, was able to make the most of those first few months following the birth of her first child. Now, it sounds like she might be ready to get back in the game.
Williams and Ohanian welcomed daughter, Alexis Olympia, back in September and she’s been a doting mother ever since, even posting about the sadness of teething and how sad it makes her to think of stopping breastfeeding.
If you know anything about Serena Williams, though, you will know that she’s highly competitive and knows that at 36 years old, the clock is ticking on her career. That’s probably why she will be facing off against Latvian player, Jelena Ostapenko in an exhibition match on Saturday at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.
It’s the first time she will play tennis since giving birth but, if nothing else, we all know Williams is fierce. She did, after all, win the 2017 Australian Open in January, her 23rd Grand Slam title, at eight weeks pregnant. That’s insanity!
In a statement to ESPN, Williams said: “I am delighted to be returning to the court in Abu Dhabi for the first time since the birth of my daughter in September. The Mubadala World Tennis Championship has long marked the beginning of the men’s global tennis season and I am excited and honored to be making my comeback as part of the first women to participate in the event.”
If she wins, it will set the tone for the year ahead while serving as another victory for 2017. Good luck, Serena!
